23.-27. November 2013 / Myanmar
Sailing & Photography

This trip has been revived and will be open for the next week if you are interested you need to contact us immediately to book your spot on this fabulous trip...

Photo Sailing Trip to Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar 11/23/2013.

We will sail into the Mergui Archipelago, a group of 800 deserted island, located in southern Myanmar, November 23rd - 27th, 2013

Be one of the first to explore one of the planet´s most unspoilt destinations under the guidance of three professional photographers:

The Yacht

This beautiful sailing yacht measures 85 feet in length (25 meters). That's longer than the Santa Maria, the boat that Christopher Columbus sailed into history when he discovered the Americas. In fact, with all her space, you could almost forget you were holidaying on a yacht. The sheer size, and the facilities on board, make for a holiday getaway that you and your friends won't forget.
It's your trip of a lifetime. And the crew will do everything possible to make it an amazing experience.

Cabins & Quarters

The yacht has four guest cabins, each fully air conditioned with ensuite bathrooms and electric toilets. Two of the cabins boast queen-size beds, while the other two feature twin beds. Behind the cockpit is the triple stateroom. The entire aft of the boat is shaded and fitted with multiple dining spaces and sunbathing areas.

The boat's centre is dominated by the generous galley and saloon dining area. But chances are that you'll be enjoying most of your meals outside in the sun or in Myanmar's mild evenings.

1) Anchor Locker, 2) Head/Shower, 3) Crew Quarters, 4) Double Stateroom, 5) Dining Area, 6) Galley, 7) Workshop & Sail Loft, 8) Triple Stateroom, 9) Lazaret

Our Sailing Area, the Mergui Archipelago

Think white beaches lined with palm trees and dense jungle. Think swimming in azure water amongst colorful reef fish, spotting corals, and collecting seashells. Now, picture eagles circling above, gibbons and monitor lizards eyeing you from the thickets, while a sundowner is being mixed for you on board the luxury 85 feet yacht. And best of all, you have this entire experience to yourself.

On Land

Due to government neglect and the region’s long isolation, its 800 plus islands have remained virtually untouched. They are composed of limestone and granite and vary in size from tiny to islands larger than Singapore. Most of them (we have yet to find one that isn’t) are covered in thick jungle growth, which drops into azure waters, interrupted only by beaches, rocky headlands, tidal rivers, and mangrove forests. Lampi, the largest of the islands, is part national park and home to some of the planet’s oldest mangrove forests.
Animals on the islands include gibbons, pythons, civet cats, huge monitor lizards and the rabbit-sized mouse deer. Hornbills are a common sight, while kites and white-bellied sea eagles circle above every island and kingfishers dart around quiet mangrove forests. Frigate birds, pacific reef egrets, green imperial pigeons, and emerald doves are just some of the birds native to this diverse archipelago.

Snorkeling and Diving

The whole area is an underwater paradise. Extensive coral reef landscapes provide a home to sea creatures: sea turtles, lion fish, cardinal fish, rays, triggerfish, surgeonfish, puffer fish abound, and, with some luck, you can spot the world’s largest fish, the plankton-eating whale shark. Further out west, where the continental shelf drops off into the deep sea, a range of underwater mountains called the Burma Banks are a thrilling diving area for the experienced. We provide you with snorkeling equipment at no extra cost.

Meet the Sea Gypsies

The traditional inhabitants of the Mergui Archipelago are the Moken, a people who live off and on the sea. Sometimes called "sea-gypsies", this ethnic minority group leads a traditional, semi-nomadic lifestyle, dominated by diving for sea cucumbers, fishing and bartering.
UNESCO examined the Mergui Archipelago as a potential World Heritage Site for its biodiversity, and the organisation's report concludes:
While the biodiversity is largely unknown, the intact vegetation on such an array of islands, with associated marine habitats and spectacular geomorphology, is likely to be of high global biodiversity significance. The biodiversity values of this set of forested continental islands, and the limited protection afforded such coastal islands elsewhere in the region, indicates that they are likely to be of global priority and form a potentially important trans-boundary World Heritage inscription."

Let's hope for the best. But don't miss out now:

Come before the area gets too famous!

We will meet you at the Ranong airport at 8.00 am. You will need to have a valid Burma visa (Myanmar embassy Bangkok).

The government of Myanmar charges a fee for visiting the Mergui Archipelago and the Marine National Park, depending on the number of people and days. At present we are in negotiation with the government to work out a fixed price. Currently you have to calculate approximately 150 USD per person. Landscape Photography with Andreas Minge
Let me take you to the beautiful Bhumibol Dam and Lake, 50 km north of the city of Tak in the province of Tak. Bhumibol Dam with its large water reservoir and the surrounding mountains provides a perfect area to create amazing landscape photographs. According to Wikipedia, the water reservoir has a surface area of 300 square km. Since it is quite calm at this time of the year, you will be able to create unique compositions with the reflections in the waters surface, regardless of the cloud conditions. It is not a common tourist destination and is very quiet on weekdays but during the weekend, the locals like to go there. Because it so busy on the weekends, I have to offer this tour on a week day.
We will visit 2 islands, 5 and 10 km offshore. The first island offers a nice view over the entire lake and there is a monk living on top of it. We will have lunch at the floating restaurant on this island where they serve fish dishes exclusively.
The second island has a great sandy beach with a great assembly of rocks which are perfect for composing in landscape photographs. A comfortable hotel accommodation and all meals at good restaurants guarantee a pleasant stay. I will carry an icebox with cold drinks in the boat to keep you happy and apart from a few steps there will be no climbing mountains this time.
On the 2nd day we will shoot at the river in the magnificent morning light near the hotel. After breakfast I will explain post processing the way I do it with landscapes using our photographs from the lake and the river. I will bring my Power Mac with a 27“ monitor to insure a proper workflow. As Photoshop is the most common program for post processing, I will use it for my explanation. I will show you how to improve your photograph in a few simple steps. We will have time to have a look at several techniques and tricks to make your photographs stand out.
This tour will be the perfect getaway for metropolis Bangkokians and an advantage for those interested in post processing as well. This tour is limited to only 4 participants to make sure everyone gets full attention. I am looking forward to having a great time with you.
